El Consell del Cent era una institució de govern de la ciutat de Barcelona, d'origen jaqués, establida en el segle XIII que va perdurar fins al segle XVIII. El seu nom té l'origen en el nombre dels seus membres, que eren cent. Panoràmica del Saló de Cent Jaume I el Conquistador va crear l'any 1249 l'estructura fonamental del govern municipal de Barcelona: un consell de 4 membres, auxiliats per 8 consellers i una assemblea de Probi homets -prohoms- tots ells membres de la mà major (el mà major). Després de diverses modificacions, l'any 1265 l'organització municipal va quedar definitivament estructurada: l'autoritat municipal va recaure sobre 3 consellers triats per un Consell de cent personalitats. La importància del Consell de Cent es mostra en molts exemples, com que l'any 1464 va proclamar rei d'Aragó a Pere el Conestable de Portugal. Un altre exemple és la negativa del Consell de Cent d'acceptar la concessió feta pel rei d'un estudi general, Martín l'Humà, el 10 de gener de 1401, va atorgar el privilegi reial de la fundació de l'Estudi General de Medicina a Barcelona, amb les mateixes prerrogatives que el de Montpeller. Que finalment va donar origen a la Universitat de Barcelona, l'any 1450.
